Droopy eyelids and bags under the eyes can be corrected with eye lid plastic surgery or blephroplasty. This is a very delicate procedure and is equally effective for men and women. Blepheroplasty can be done alone, or in combination with other cosmetic procedures to enhance the appearance and to make the eyes look youthful and sharp. The procedures generally done in combination of blephroplasty are facelift, chin liposuction or brow lift.
The procedure is most commonly done for the age group of 35 and above, but if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.
Underlying medical diseases like diabetes, hypertension or cardiac problems add to the risk. Certain eye problems like a detached retina or glaucoma are also reasons for concern.
The procedure is done under anesthesia and to perform this delicate surgery incisions are made following the natural lines of upper eyelids and just below the lashes in the lower lids. Working through these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removes or redistributes excess fat, and often trims the sagging skin. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures which are removed in 3-4 days.
After surgery, the eyelids are smothered with antibiotic ointment and a fine bandage may be applied. The eyelids may feel tight and sore as the effect of anesthesia wears off. Adequate analgesia is prescribed to keep you comfortable and pain free but if you feel severe pain, it is advised to call the surgeon or emergency room immediately.
The incidence of bruising varies from person to person; in most people it reaches its peak during the first week, and generally lasts anywhere between 1-2 weeks.
To prevent dry eyes and infections eye drops and ointments are prescribed. It is common to experience itching, sensitivity to light, grittiness or dryness of eyes and slight changes in the vision for first few weeks. All these effects are temporary and eventually get settled.
The post op progress is monitored very closely during the first week and the stitches are removed four days after the surgery. By that time the swelling and discoloration around the eyes gradually starts to subside. It is better to wear sunglasses when outdoors during the day for first few weeks.
The results are absolutely striking and the sharp, more alert and youthful look after eyelid plastic surgery lasts for many years.
Care must be taken during the surgery because if excess skin is removed the eyes don’t close properly and a corrective surgery may be required. The incidence of this complication indicates poor surgical technique and can be avoided by choosing the experts in eye lid surgery.
The eyelid skin is extremely delicate and the surrounding area has a lot of very small blood vessels, these factors lead to some bruising and swelling following the surgery. This generally lasts for three to five days and completely disappears in a couple of weeks. There can be slight blurring of vision which is transient and the risk of infection is minimized by using antibiotic ointments.
Sometimes the eyes don’t close fully for a few days after the surgery, this problem is addressed by using artificial tears and lubricants to prevent dryness and stimulate healing process. As the healing process completes, the eyes lids regain their normal function with improved appearance.
Blood thinners, like Aspirin and other medications, which increase the risk of bleeding, have to be stopped a few days before the procedure. This approach minimizes the post op bleeding and bruising.
